The Facts

thinking

Since 2004 there have been three changes to the EPA exhaust emission limits. These limits have been revised downwards to help climate change, global warming and the environment. To help achieve lower emission limits a quantum leap in alternate (LPG) fuels technology was undertaken. In the main this relied on the introduction of sequential gas (LPG) injection systems.

This new state of the art technology caused prices to rise due to increased product costs and the price of the LPG conversions went up by $1300 - $1800. In August 2006, to combat this rise the Federal Government introduced the scheme to offset this cost. They did this to encourage Australian motorists to continue to use “our” clean, abundant and self sufficient local fuel supply located at our back door.

This means that current state of the art LPG injection conversions, after the rebate are actually cheaper than an old-fashioned conversion performed pre 2004. Now that the price of gap has widened between petrol and LPG, the return on investment is better and the return period has shortened.

Bear in mind that an LPG conversion is not just a retail unit where you may be able to price match a like product from store to store. There are three areas to consider when having a conversion, the type and price of the system, the price of the cylinder and the labour costs.

Fuel prices and comparisons.

2005

If LPG retails for $0.55, Petrol retails for $0.95 and we use 20% more LPG than petrol. Comparable cost of LPG = $0.66
Weekly Costs = $100 Petrol or $70 LPG
Weekly Fuel Saving = $30
Yearly Fuel saving = $1560

2009

If LPG retails for $0.50, Petrol retails for $1.35 and we use 20% more LPG than petrol. Comparable cost of LPG = $0.60
Weekly Costs = $100 Petrol or $45 LPG
Weekly Fuel Saving = $55
Yearly Fuel saving = $2860

N.B. Prices based on yearly averages which may be subject to periodical changes.
